The Community Quilt Project began on September 9, 2009 with a quilt for the blogger known as othniel. Othniel was gravely ill and was due to have a surgery he feared he might not survive. To help him, Sara Reed had an inspiration came to make a quilt for him bearing messages of love and support from his internet community, written in archival ink on muslin.
The messages were gathered in a post on the blog, Street Prophets and othniel found them while surfing the internet from his hospital bed. Those loving words were in his mind when he went into surgery. The quilt was completed quickly and thereafter, othniel would not enter a hospital without it. More than three years later, after surviving a number of subsequent illnesses, othniel at last succumbed to a virulent respiratory infection. His community quilt held a place of honor at his memorial service and is now a treasured memento for his longtime partner, caregiver, and love of his life, austex54.
Thus began a series of quilts, all based on the love and support to be found in friendship on the internet, often among people who have never met in person. Sara Reed and her sister, Ann Reed, have made quilts for people with cancer, life-threatening infections, AIDS, kidney failure, traumatic injury, heart problems and also for their caregivers The quilts are a tangible reminder that the connections between us all are very real and that our words have greater power for good than we realize.
