VA Hospital Service Project: Portland

Posted in 2016

This year, rather than coinciding with a Netroots Nation conference, we delivered on March 10, 2016 to the hospital local to me.  As it turns out, the timing was good.  We were told that March can be a thinner time for gifts of comfort items to the VA so our gifts will be immediately useful.

The quilts may be used by patients in the hospital or in hospice.  The Chief of Volunteers, Shaun Benson, showed us the labels that are stitched onto quilts used in hospice — they tell the recipient that the quilt was made for them with love.  Once the veteran in hospice has passed away, the quilt is given to the family as a memento.  It goes without saying that these gifts are greatly treasured.

One of the quilts I'll be donating to the DK VA Hospital Support Project.  I haven't decided on the second one yet -- maybe it will be a log cabin.

Hi everyone.  This diary is to check in with everyone who is making a quilt or quilts for the DK VA Hospital Support Project -- and to explain other parts of the project, as well. Our goal is to have 65 quilts, wheelchair size (36" x 60") or lap throws, to donate to the the Detroit VA Hospital for their nursing home.  Delivery day is July 16 so figure having them shipped to our Michigan depository by the end of June.

While I am co-chair of the VA Hospital scarves and hats project, where we now have commitments for 64 hats and scarves, I am just a helper bee for the VA Hospital Nursing Home Quilts Project. Truthfully in general I'm a worker bee. In the working world I used to inhabit, I turned down promotions because I am not management material. I was a manager once. Hated it. But I digress.  What I'd like to do in this diary is give some suggestions for simple quilts that look nice.  I'll be focusing on three patterns with variations on them.

As some of you may know, Netroots Nation is being held in Detroit July 17 to July 20.  There is a group set up, the DK VA Hospital Service Project.  I am co-chair, along with Broths, to provide hand made scarves and hats for the vets.  Sara R is chairing the committee overseeing the quilt project.  She wants to have handmade quilts for all the vets residing at the nursing home part of the VA hospital.  Follow me below the orange squiggle for more on this.
